Amber-Rose Thorpe
BA (Hons) Fine Art
Amber-Rose Thorpe’s distinctive and intimate textile hangings explore family, childhood, love and femininity themes. Thorpe is a text-based artist who uses their past and present lived experiences as inspiration for diary-style automatic writing, also often influenced by rhymes and hymns from their youth.
Thorpe’s work focuses on creating a feeling of nostalgia in the viewer, imposing their own memories onto others to recreate a sense of childhood. To establish this feeling Thorpe uses scale to force the viewer to look up to read the text above them, in the same manner in which a child would look up to an adult. The bedroom is used in Thorpe’s work as a central theme to explore different life stages, using the bedroom walls’ colour as an identifier of different ages.
