Ben Sanderson

BA (Hons) Graphic Communication

Selfies of people in bed ready to listen to a PillowTalk by Duolingo, with the cheeky owl mascot lounging beside them under the covers.
NUA Award Winner D&AD Yellow Pencil

I’m a designer who enjoys working with campaigns, copy, and culture. From promoting a brand determined to make language learning more accessible, to creating a new typeface that celebrates LGBTQ+ sport, my graduate year at NUA has reminded me that design should always put people first. In fact, collaborating on projects with other people is what draws me even further into the industry – all working together to find one, unique insight that our project can sit proudly upon.

I have grown to thoroughly appreciate those research stages: getting under the skin of an audience or the issue at hand ensures that my work remains relevant and appropriate.

An explainer video that shows this crude campaign in action, featuring illustrations of an owl with a suggestive smile across posters and app content.

D&AD Yellow Pencil
Two posters that feature colourful, experimental typography with sharp, geometric forms. One poster says, ‘you’re out!’, and the other asks ‘offence or defence?’.
Social media posts that are reminiscent of old, letterpress placards at a protest. One worker has even changed their Zoom background to remind colleagues that they are logging off soon.
Dark, moody posters with harsh yet colourful mark making. Within them are collaged images of NHS strikes, pollution, and the US Capitol riots.
