Carl Durban

BA (Hons) Fine Art

BA Fine Art work by Carl Durban showing a close up of an eye blinking a message in Morse Code.

I am currently exploring methods of communication, in particular non-verbal communication; semaphore, sign language, smoke signals, Morse Code and Braille. My experiments into Braille have led to 3D work including plaster, bronze casting and aluminium punched with messages. I have also created a proposal for a land art Braille piece that can only be read from the air. More recently I have been exploring Morse Code using a single blinking eye as the method of communicating.

I intend to deepen my investigation into non-verbal communication and coded messages. I will still practice ‘not-knowing’ therefore further research into any line of enquiry will determine the outcome. I will still ‘play’ and explore ideas fed from research. My background in advertising and design may determine certain ways of communicating any uncovered ideas.

BA Fine Art work by Carl Durban showing a still image of the entire twenty foot plain white wall with five embedded videos of the eyes blinking messages in Morse Code. Each eye is positioned at the eye height of the subject.

I am also looking at sound as a medium, in particular, combining sound with sculpture and as a response to the viewer and their presence in a space.

BA Fine Art work by Carl Durban showing a metre square piece of aluminium that has a message in Braille punched into it, each bump is approximately 40mm. The message reads; 'Can you read me?' and is stacked with each word on its own line.
BA Fine Art work by a collective of five 3rd year Fine Art students called 2Faulty. The image shows a close up detail of a hand made zine that contains the output of the collective including Dada poems and various 10-minute tasks using words no longer in common use.
