Catherine Swain
BA (Hons) Fine Art
I am interested in philosophical and anthropological questions about our human existence on the planet we share. Research is important to me structuring my practice through both independent learning and collaboration. Museums, collections, exhibitions, and objects, I find influential shaping the direction of my practice. Nature and local landscape help me to observe textures and rhythm through drawing, watercolour painting, photography, and video, which I then incorporate into my work.
Using traditional casting methods in bronze and plaster, I find allows self-expression and research to merge as a creative outcome conveying responses to questions. Painting with oils and acrylics extends this questioning through observation and research of colour psychology and materials.
Highly Commended in the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society Prize for Fine Art 2022
