Charley Smith

BA (Hons) Photography

Manga art piece by Charley Smith. Bold lined illustration inspired by Araki.

I’d like to think that I am a mixed media artist, drawing manga and anime pieces as well as fashion and portrait photography. I take inspiration from everywhere I can whether it is film, photographers, manga artists or poetry, trying to create innovative work that pushes the boundaries of my imagination.
In my work, I strive to give both myself and others a creative outlet to express themselves. Creative mediums have always been my way of winding down, where I find happiness.

BA Hons photography shot by Charley Smith. SFX portrait shoot of a male model wearing black bunny ears. Visible tattoos and chains.

My latest project combines and infuses the masculine and feminine, creating a severe juxtaposition between bruised SFX makeup alongside feminine accessories. I aimed to make original and intriguing portraits shooting mainly male models. I wanted this project to push me out of my comfort zone of documentary photography. It has helped me solidify my style and aesthetic whilst still being able to use my main influence of manga and anime.

An illustration piece hand drawn of Gyro Zeppeli from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure in Araki's art style. A manga art style pieces of a cowboy. Bold lines and dot work.
A self portrait shoot inspired by the manga, Berserk. Wearing a long black wig with the head back to draw attention to the sword earring and the brand of sacrifice
