Elena Genovese

BA (Hons) Fine Art

An installation by Elena Genovese depicts a painting of two figures and an animal travelling through a corridor and multiple sculptures on the floor. A grey stripe connects the painting and the picnic.

I am graduating from Norwich University of the Arts with a degree in BA Fine Art. I have undertaken research into the abject and disgust which have become core concepts in my practice.

An oil painting by Elena Genovese that depicts two figures and a dog-like animal travelling through liminal space. The figures' bodies are merging together in the foreground and the animal is in the distance.

I investigate the ambiguous nature of the boundaries of ‘self’ and ‘other’, and I am drawn to the relationship between fascination and revulsion concerning the body. Metamorphosis and movement are current themes in my work. I draw inspiration from liminal spaces to convey feelings of unease and discomfort, hence highlighting the importance of change and the unpleasant middle stage of transition.

A close up image of the sculpture's face. The ambiguous figure has a spoon of red hairy matter in its mouth.

As a Fine Art Curation Team member, I have developed my organisational skills, problem-solving, and project management. I aided in the planning and execution of GradFest22 alongside multiple exhibitions and workshops at the university. While studying under lockdown conditions I have learnt to adapt, communicate and respond to feedback through online platforms and increased my resilience and positive attitude.
