BA (Hons) Fine Art
My digital photography and video art explores the idea of beauty and repulsion diving into psychological ideology in artwork. I was inspired by ‘Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection’ by Julia Kristen and exploring those ideas in her artwork, playing on the tension between beauty and disgust in order to evoke a reaction. The themes and imagery involve fruit and flowers, inspired by old school renaissance symbology and paintings.
The imagery is often distorted and photographed in specific ways to make the subject ambiguous, leaving more room for philosophical interpretation. Born and raised in Poland with a Catholic background, she was surrounded by Religious Iconography which sparked interest to explore some of the symbolism in order to understand the imagery that she was always surrounded by – taking a deeper look into her tradition as well as her background.
