Freya Parfitt

BA (Hons) Fine Art

BA Fine Art work by Freya Parfitt showing a stethoscope-like sculpture made from copper microbore pipe and bicycle bells.

Grounded in the exploration of identity, my work utilizes a combination of sound, sculpture and video to pull apart and defamiliarize perceptions of self. Straying from classic representation, I choose instead to focus on the lesser thought-of aspects of a person, such as the sounds of the body. The sound of a voice differs from the individual’s own perception due to the presence or lack of bodily reverb, altering the richness of the sound.

I became fascinated with the notion of capturing the vibrations within the body and displaying them separately – presenting the viewer with an aspect of another’s identity they wouldn’t otherwise hear. Though primarily based in sound, I also use sculpture and video in tandem as a way of experimenting with objects and visuals as they can connect to identity through their connotations. Installation is equally important within my practice, due to my interest in audience participation.
