Jennifer Lovatt

BA (Hons) Fine Art

An assemblage of un-stretched canvas panels dyed with natural plant materials sourced from Jennifer Lovatt's woodland home, stitched together with gold thread, suspended in the trees, backlit by the setting sun.

Wonder. Curiosity. Connection.

Three words which characterise the spirit of Jennifer Lovatt’s practice – communicating her personal relationship with creation. Using an expressive abstract painting style, she aspires to engage her audience with work which explores the sensory nature of surface, texture, space and colour merged with feelings of memory, time and location.

A draped canvas of delicately coloured panels of grey, yellow and apricot derived from plant dyes are stitched together with gold thread, displayed in sculptural forms over hazel tree limbs.

Her intuitive work evolves from daily inspiration experienced at her woodland home motivated by the forms and textures of the natural world and the cyclical rhythms of her environment. Paintings evolve through a process of experimentation with materials, exploring fluidity or texture of paint and the drawn line in combination with surface.

The artist works en plein air on raw canvas to capture the effect of dancing branches projected onto the back-lit canvas by the light of the setting sun in springtime.

Recent awareness of the toxicity and environmental impact of commercial artist materials has led her to look at improving the materials used in her practice. She is currently exploring crafting her own paint and dyes, including the use of plant materials from her home location.

An abstract painting in handmade oil paints of blue and green hues, taking inspiration from light and glimpses of colour of broken views beyond; seen through dancing branches.
Layered memories and thoughts felt and experienced in the depths of sleep; swirling marks and layered paint - indigo, aqua and white - impasto paint with fluid drips, feelings made visible.
