Lucy Oliver

BA (Hons) Interior Design

The isometric drawing is the best way to highlight this scheme all in one visual. It highlights all three floors and their distinctive characteristics as well as the staircase that links them together. Pre-visual of the different design languages for each floor and its unique needs as well as how the spiral staircase links the floors together, creating unity through the space. This detail highlights the stairs size and style. It is precast in concrete and clad in engineered wood with mismatched steel and glass handrails that were inspired by smoke formations. This section highlights all three floors and their distinctive characteristics particularly the operational areas and the administrative and community areas as well as the staircase that links them together. This highlights how the firefighters will benefit from the redesign. It's far away from the operational areas and the materiality differs dramatically, creating a clear work/home divide. This highlights how the administrative spaces have been redesigned to encourage a more positive collaborative working environment. The desks are modular and are positioned facing each other to aid this. This shows how the operational spaces have been redesigned to be functional and practical for the firefighters. The use of steel and concrete are key features of the operation areas. This is the physical visualisation of my bespoke staircase. It highlights the size, style as well as the mismatched steel and glass handrails which are inspired by smoke formations.

I am an interior designer that has a passion for designing commercial and civic spaces with the people who use them. I believe that focusing on the users in commercial and civic spaces can benefit the design greatly as well as the experience for the users. It requires an empathic, considered approach to designing and when executed well, creates completely bespoke, highly functional spaces that radiate positivity. Inclusivity and wellness are two huge factors that I always consider and focus on when designing. By using a user centred mindset and elevating their voices, opinions and experiences great interiors can easily be achieved in all commercial and civic spaces. This mindset is something I have used in all my designs and plan to continue using in the future.

‘Refocus’ is a clear example of how I design with users in mind. By diving into my users world I could then empathise with them and create a positive, practical design that will benefit every person that uses into my space.
