Micha Hollis

BA (Hons) Photography

BA Photography work by Micha Hollis showing a portrait of drag artist Brat. The lighting is multi-coloured with pink on the left and blue on the right.

I am a portrait photographer, focusing mainly upon the subject of identity, exploring many different aspects of it from personal clothing and makeup choices to alter egos and drag artists.

I use self-portraiture as a means of exploring my own identity, breaking down and processing events that have had a big impact upon my life, whether good or bad. My current work is on the local drag scene in Norwich, displaying the amazing diversity of styles and talents within the area, the community that has helped me so much in finding my own identity.

My work focuses on the use of colouration and lighting in order to further enhance messaging within the work or the aesthetics. For my Drag series, I wanted to recreate show lighting commonly used during drag shows, while also using blue and pink as a nod towards binary gendered norms; drag is an art form that can allow people to explore their gender identity along the whole spectrum.
