Oscar Woodiwiss

BA (Hons) Illustration

Grid-like page layout detailed with imagery such as daisies and dandelions. Norwich's iconic yellow canary is also featured. A column of cherubs kicking footballs accompanies two young trans men embracing.

Oscar Woodiwiss is an illustrator with a penchant for the kitsch and camp, harbouring a particular fondness for the works of James Bidgood and Joe Brainard. Inspired by these late, great icons of queer sensuality, his work explores the intimate vulnerability of gay and trans relationships. Oscar specialises in detailed illustration – using a combination of digital and traditional techniques whilst branching out into experimental mediums such as risograph, collage, and zines.

A pair of angels share a kiss beneath an illustrative arch. The border is decorated with festive imagery: winter trees, branches of holly, holy spirit doves, and church bells.

He is a self-proclaimed advocator for “trans indulgence” and would be flattered to be asked what that means, but regretfully declines to elaborate. We suspect he made it up on the spot to make his monthly trips to the local GP for testosterone sound vaguely revolutionary.

Oscar is looking to further his practice through collaborating with creative peers and producing more personal art that holds true to his values of LGBT representation.

(Left) Bela Lugosi leers menacingly, cape open to reveal a chiselled torso being groped by disembodied hands. (Right) A faded postcard of Reni's Mary Magdalene surrounded by pressed flowers.
A lattice grid composed of vines displays each stage of the strawberry's growth. It transforms from bud to blossoming flower. As the petals wilt the green berry ripens to red.
A heart-headed figure walks briskly with a letter in hand; scarf trailing behind them. Above their head appears a thought bubble of their presumed lover's heart-shaped face.
