Philippa Beaven

BA (Hons) Illustration

A watercolour painting of a woman, dressed in 19th century clothing, standing beside a lake looking over her shoulder at the gothic mansion behind her.

I am an inquisitive, motivated and thoughtful illustrator passionate about storytelling and book illustration through traditional mediums. I have built a creative practice based on character design, nature, and landscapes, incorporating harsh and cinematic lighting and atmosphere into my work. I have interests in the natural world, storytelling, folklore, and mythology in my work, which translates into a dreamy and ethereal style of image-making.

The final project for my Illustration degree was the writing and illustrating of‚ ‘Ivy’, a full-length graphic novel. Set in the late 1800s, ‘Ivy’ tells a Gothic love story with a dark twist that pushed me to explore sequential and narrative illustration within my creative practice.
I aspire to illustrate and write graphic novels like this in the future, with inspirations from classical literature, cinema, and queer media to tell dynamic and captivating stories.
