BA (Hons) Photography
I am an image maker concentrating on portraiture and documentary photography. I am particularly interested in creating pictures that explore mental health, wellbeing and self-reflection in a non-exploitative and non-romanticised way. I take inspiration from literature and music and am influenced by photographers such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Paolo Roversi and Sukita.
My work explores concepts of light and dark, movement, and distortion. Photography is not just about taking pictures, it is a way of documenting and educating. It is also a conversation between photographer and subject and the building of a relationship whist creating a safe space. These connections are what inspire me and they inform the stories I want to tell.
I enjoy using other forms of art to help create an end result and experimenting with different photography and lighting techniques. This inevitably involves risk-taking and I am learning to objectively review ‘happy accidents’. I utilise the opinions of those around me – both artists and non artists – to gain a wider perspective of my work in progress, and this often helps to form the final result.
