Samantha Lea

BA (Hons) Fine Art

Large scale abstract painting with blood red splatters on creased cotton in the corner of a darkened room

I am a painter who is often covered in the paint that was meant for my canvas. My work aims to explore the tension around blood when it is expressed outside of oneself and how it confronts commentary on psyche, trauma, mortality and condition of self.

From watching horror films in my preteens until now, I draw influence from horror film tropes and that of the Vienna Actionism artists. I create large scale paintings that splatter and smear the vicinity of the studio. Connecting the onscreen horror across to contemporary painting, my performative paintings seek to extend beyond the canvas and overwhelm the space and viewers in red.
