BA (Hons) Fine Art
My practice centres around traditionally inspired portraiture set in a modern context. The small-scale paintings that form my body of work are aesthetically orientated but also carry themes of memory, friendship, and love.
I draw inspiration from Pre-Raphaelite art, 18th Century portrait miniatures, Flemish painters, and contemporary artists such as Stuart Pearson Wright. My work is technically influenced by Old Master paintings and classical painting methods. The intention of my style is not to create a photo-realistic reproduction, as the act of painting itself is an important aspect of the work; in a time when anybody can take a photograph, portrait painting becomes sacred.
The principal constant in the paintings I create is the relationship between myself and my sitters. The subjects of the portraits are almost always close friends of mine and these personal connections are what drives my practice.
