When you walk into a room, you experience not only what you see, but the sounds you hear, the scents you smell, the surfaces you touch.
For a space to be pleasing, all of these elements must work together in harmony.
It must be a utilitarian space.
It cannot be too cluttered, too complicated.
The mind delights in the new and unexpected, but is overwhelmed by too much.
This interplay of light, space, air and objects is by no means new. I feel firmly planted in a long tradition. My biggest inspirations are Kelly Wearstler, Antoni Gaudi, and the nameless thousands who made the Gothic churches of medieval Europe.
From them, I have distilled a style that is Contemporary Edwardian – early 20th century in look with hints of Catalan modernism and Art Deco, but with the complexity that comes from Gothic and then later Baroque churches, and the interplay of colours and comfort that is found Wearstler’s work.
Colourful, comfortable, complex.
But not cluttered or overbearing.
