Carrie Clarke

BA (Hons) Fine Art

While you were sleeping was made using the process of making without thinking. Engaging with feelings instead of ideas and using chance to determine the outcome.

I am a multimedia artist whose work explores the human experience through themes of self-reflection, contemplation and introspection. During my Fine Art degree at Norwich University of the Arts, I have steadily learnt to ‘trust the process’ and as a result, I have become more of an explorer and risk taker in my practice.

Listening for More is designed to engage the viewer into a reflective mood in which the subtle movement of the sculptures is considered.

Working intuitively and instinctively my method is one of relinquishing control over predicted outcomes, allowing the materials to guide the process and chance happenings to occur.

Initially working with maquettes using everyday materials such as paper, recycled soft furnishings and metals, I then draw, paint and photograph these before repeating the process.

Movement of expression in the form of dance is important in my practice. I use this to make instinctive gestural strokes in paintings and initial shapes in sculptures.

Each iteration informs the next stage of the work, developing spontaneously, pushing until I have an emotional response and it’s this connection that drives my work as an artist.

Winner of the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society (NCAS) Prize for Fine Art and Highly Commended in the NCAS Prize for New Makers 2023.

The result was then painted, exaggerating the colours seen in the greys of the shadows, echoing and highlighting my fascination for the unseen and the hidden.
The dialogue between 2D and 3D allows for play with scale and perspective. A small scale paper sculpture, when painted, becomes a mysterious object in itself.
